The First Noel

17th Century English carol


The first noel, the angels did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

Jesus, our brother kind and good,
Was humbly born in a stable of wood.
And the friendly beasts around Him stood,

"I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown,
"I carried His mother uphill and down.
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town.
I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown.

"I," said the cow, all white and red,
"I gave Him my manger for a bed.
I gave Him my hay to pillow His head.
I," said the cow, all white and red.

"I," said the sheep with curly horn,
"I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm.
He wore my coat on that Christmas morn.

"I," said the dove from the rafters high,
"I cooed Him to sleep that He should not cry
We cooed Him to sleep my love and I.

"I," said the camel, yellow and black,
Over the desert upon my back,

And thus, every beast, remembering it well,

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty the snowman was a jolly, happy soul,
With a corn cob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say,
He was made of snow, but the children know how he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found.
For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around.
Oh, Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me.

Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day,
So he said, "Let's run, and we'll have some fun now before I melt away."
Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand,
Running here and there all around the square, sayin', "Catch me if you can."
He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop.
And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler, "Stop!"
For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way,
But he waved goodbye sayin', "Don't you cry, I'll be back again some day."

Look at Frosty go.
